How technology has influenced village development
Researcher: Peter Clinton
Technology and its application has evolved significantly over the centuries, from primitive beginnings to the state of affairs we take for granted today. It is unlikely that the village played a lead role in the development of any ‘headline’ technology, but it is an inescapable fact that the influence of technology on village development and the lives of its people, through acquisition and application of ‘externally developed’ technology, has been highly significant.
The influence, acquisition and applicationof technology is often subtle. Some will be through interaction of village people with ‘local outsiders’ (e.g. nearby villages and towns), and some via exposure of village people to the influence of externally imposed, regionally and nationally developed technology, such as infrastructure projects (road, rail, canals, structures, etc). This ‘cause and effect’ relationship usually leaves permanent evidence of its influence long after the originating stimulus has passed, which continues to evolve. Technology and its application manifests itself in a wide variety of forms, but this project is focussing on life-influencing aspects such as transport (road, rail & canal), facilitating manufacturing, trades and services, extraction and use of raw materials, etc. The objective is to provide a backdrop and reference timeline for further work on village life.
