The Rise of Trade in Holmes Chapel 1840 to 1870
Researchers: Gwen Hayhurst and Bill Barber
We are looking at how the coming of the railway brought more trades people into Holmes Chapel and how local businesses further developed. We want to explore the kind of businesses there were in what was a small rural community, the movement of goods in and out of the village and the changes that came about with easier connections to larger towns. We will concentrate on the village centre for further research.
